About:

Special Interest Group is dedicated to developing innovative designs with unique properties, such as unusual deformation mechanisms and improved structural integrity, which have significant implications for industries like sports equipment, soft robotics, and energy absorption. We'll also touch on the network's focus on space and aviation, where metamaterials are being used to enhance spacecraft performance, structural response, etc. Building on these foundational efforts, I'll share our specific work on mechanical metamaterials. We tackle the challenges of designing damage mechanisms due to the complex interactions of various parameters and length scales. In our research, we aim to understand structures on the verge of mechanical instability, where stress concentrations are influenced by robust topology and geometry-dependent factors. By combining different topologically distinct lattices, we demonstrate ways to control the damage path and boost fracture toughness.

Biography on speaker:

Marcelo A. Dias obtained his bachelor's degree in physics from the State University of São Paulo, Brazil. Four years later, he commenced an MSc in theoretical physics at his alma mater. In 2012, he earned his PhD from the University of Massachusetts, USA, where he researched the mechanics of origami structures and growth mechanisms. Marcelo has worked as a researcher on a broad range of topics in structural engineering and applied mathematics at Brown University School of Engineering (USA), Aalto University (Finland), and the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics at KTH (Sweden). Before joining the University of Edinburgh, Marcelo was an Associate Professor of mechanical engineering at Aarhus University in Denmark, where he led his research group "Mechanical Metamaterials and Soft Matter." Marcelo is currently a Reader (Associate Professor in the UK) in Structural Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, leading the "Mechanics and Geometry of Advanced Structures Laboratory" (MEGA SLab) in the Institute for Infrastructure and Environment at the School of Engineering. Additionally, he holds an EPSRC Fellowship.
