Join us for an evening exploring how satellites help us track the subtle changes shaping our home.
This March, 𝗔𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗮𝗽 turns its attention to Earth — and how space‑based measurements give us a clearer picture of the world we live on. As part of 𝗔𝗮𝗿𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹, celebrating the theme “𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻”, we dive into how studying our planet from space helps us understand its past, present, and future. Earth Observation (EO) lets us see patterns, shifts, and processes invisible from the ground, highlighting the importance of continuous, long‑term monitoring.
𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗳 will open the evening by introducing the foundations of Earth Observation.
What is EO? What do we measure from space, and how?
As Associate Professor at Aarhus University and AU Distinguished Senior Innovator, Christoffer leads initiatives such as the 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝘂𝗯𝗲𝗦𝗮𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 (𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗖𝗢). He’ll give a guided tour of the satellites, sensors, and techniques that allow us to study Earth from above — and explain why space has become one of our most powerful scientific vantage points.
𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝗻 will then dive into a concrete example of why these measurements matter.
Marie, a PhD student at GEUS, uses 𝗜𝗻𝗦𝗔𝗥 data from ESA’s 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 to track vertical land motion with millimeter precision. Her talk uncovers how Denmark is still rising and settling after the Ice Age — and how satellites reveal these quiet geological shifts shaping our world today.
As always, we’ll have our 𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼‑𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘇 with stellar prizes,
followed by 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀 to catch you up on what’s happening above our heads.
